mathematics
We are very busy in 4th grade math. We build on the foundation of the four basic facts, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We work with double and triple digit numbers in all 4 areas. Therefore, memorization of the facts is essential. Fractions and decimals are introduced toward the end of the year.
5 Minute Club: This is a test given weekly of 100 basic facts. Students work first through the facts in 5 minutes, 4 minutes and then 3 minutes in each of the areas. Beginning with addition, they move to subtraction, multiplication, division and finally, mix-up. These tests are not graded, however, the students are awarded a ribbon each step of the way.
Estimation Wednesday: Each week the students are given an opportunity to use their estimation skills to figure out what is in the "jar". The students take turns bringing in items for the other students to "guesstimate" the number, weight or length of the items.
Multiplication Banana Split: As a reward for the students mastery of the multiplication facts (through 12), they earn a banana split. Each part of the banana split relates to a section of the multiplication table. This is a culmination of hard work and daily tests. Generally, this will take place in February.
Fridays: We generally will do logic skill building activities, critical thinking activities and just plain fun games for math. I try not to assign homework on Friday, so these activities will take place during our math time.
Textbook: There are 2 volumes to My Math textbook. We move quickly through the books, with enrichment activities used as needed. However, I use many different sources as supplemental material.
